The Story

I shot this video of an ascent of Ypsilon Mountain's Blitzen Ridge. Rossiter says, "This classic route rivals the Exum Ridge of Grand Teton in position, scale, and quality." I'm not sure I would give it quite that much praise but it is a fun route in a spectacular setting. There were a few mid 5th class moves here and there but mostly it was class 4 scrambling or 5.easy. I've done mountaineering ascent of Ypsilon years ago. This rock doesn't appear to lead to the summit? Is it a rock pile lower down on the boulderfield approaches, like a free standing pinnacle? I don't have a guide book and never heard of this ridge.

The technical challenges are lower down on the ridge. There are 4 gendarmes called "the aces" where the lion's share of the challenges are found, then there is a headwall on the ridge that provides a little more interesting climbing. From the top of the headwall there is still a couple thousand vertical feet of 3rd class scrambling to the summit.

Check out mountainproject.com and summitpost.org for more details on Blitzen Ridge.

Classic climb. I did that bad ass this summer and man the exposure is for real.

Woodchuck - When you are standing on the summit of Ypsilion looking down at Spectacle Lakes Blitzen Ridge is the ridge on the leftleading up to the summit. The four aces are the crux of the route and I will try to post a picture of it.
