Hello from Afghanistan

Posted by Archeoclimber on 2/20/2009

Hello.  I'm new to YourClimbing.com and wanted to say hello.  I'm currently in Afghanistan where I'm a journalist for the Army.  I *hope* to be returning to Texas, where I am stationed, in May or June and am excited to get climbing.  I have not climbed in Texas yet and am open to suggestions for climbing locations.  Most of the climbing I have done was in the beautiful countryside of northern Italy.  The only climbing I have done is sport climbing, but eventually will get brave enough to try traditional.

Big Rocks Park

Posted by hueco001 on 11/2/2007
Closest city/town
Glen Rose, Texas, USA
Description
Not so much a crag as a boulder garden, this city park sits on the Paluxy River, which runs through Glen Rose, TX. Numerous large granitic boulders are lumped together here with others to be found by wading downstream or hiking through small, rarely trodden paths to the bank farther down. Scenery, problems, and atmosphere make this a prime choice for a weekend trip. Photos forthcoming!

Penitentiary Hollow

Posted by hueco001 on 11/1/2007
Closest city/town
Mineral Wells, TX, US
Description
Mainly a group of limestone conglomerate at Lake Mineral Wells SP in Texas. Numerous, numerous routes, all top-rope, mainly in the 5.9/5.10 range with some healthy Class 4 stuff. Lots of highballs and new lines to explore. Easy to get to with great views of the lake. Shady year-round but watch for rain since the shade increases dry-out time.
