The Story

This was my dad (Lynn Lewis) at Jackson Falls on Memorial Day, 2007. He makes it to the top of this one. That's me belaying on the ground. I am sure he will redpoint it in the not-so-distant future. This rock is rough and tears up the skin. I couldn't make it past the third bolt on TR : )

Jackson Falls

Posted by robertjoellewis on 5/29/2007
Closest city/town
Ozark, Illinois, US
Description
Sandstone canyon with hundreds? of climbs, from 5.7 to at least 5.13 and maybe higher. Some people say this is a world-class climbing spot. Very popular with residents of Carbondale (IL), St. Louis (2 hours away), and of Chicago. There is something for everybody here, especially intermediate (5.10 to 5.12) climbers. New routes are being bolted and many more possibilites are being explored. I wasn't able to pinpoint it *exactly* on the map, but there is a book called "Vertical Heartland" with detailed directions and descriptions of most of the climbing routes. Here are some vague directions: From Vienna, Il, go northeast on 45 until you get to a general store. Make a right onto Ozark road. You will pass up a Catholic Youth camp called "Ondessonk." Follow the winding road for a while. When you see a brown park sign with a church on the left, veer left. Go about a quarter mile to Glenn Springs Road and make a right. You will see a house with a green tin roof on the corner there. You will eventually come to a deep valley and see some camping spots. You've made it! Now park, walk down the trail next to the creek and you will be on the top of the main wall next to a waterfall that is often dry during the summer.
