Do You Give Good Belay?

Greg Houston Rigging "The Bag"

I'll never forget my first belay test, a 150 pound railroad wheel dropped on a hip belay. This was in 1972 at the Voyageur Outward Bound School in Ely, Minnesota. The rope was Goldline and I had leather gloves and a wide leather belt protecting my back. That was a heck of a jerk. The experience came in handy several years later when I caught my friend in a 60 foot pendulum fall on a hip belay while climbing the Wham Ridge route on Vestal Peak (13,864') in the Weminuche Wilderness Area, CO.

Omaha Beach, the finishing shots on Emily Harrington.

and right after this, I missed her last move and fall. What an effort! The crowd was breathless as 3 climbers were near the finish of 5.13b or harder routes at the same time.

Guess there is a limit as to how many photos I can add to a blog. Got shut off mid post there.. Here's the end of the climb.  The crowd went crazy as all 3 made their last efforts within minutes of each other.  Great highlight to the afternoon climbs.

Omaha Beach, 5.14a and Emily Harrington making gonzo moves waaaay up there.

This was just a #@&* load of fun watching and shooting photos.  I have no words to describe it.   Eagerly await those of you who have had the privilege to be on this route and can add some beta to the photos with some meaningful commentary.   I hope I didn't get these mixed up with her earlier send of Flour Power.

Sequence hopefully is in correct order as Emily ascended the route.  It was quite a show, even if she fell near the finish. Enjoy.

Flash Rally day in the Motherlode, Part 1

What can I say. It was fabulous out there. Right from the start when we found the little puppies atop the hill in the morning as a sign of good fortune.    Here's a few random shots of the climbers at the Rally.

Emily makes the grab

Way out there, after several arm resting shake outs, Emily makes the lunge and hangs on.  Just stunning to watch.

Bat hang at the Motherlode

OK, I was lucky just to look up over my head and catch this 'rest' move on Saturday.  Who can fill in the details on who this was and what route he's on?  It was right along the line of sends going down between BOHICA and The Madness.  I was watching a different route at the time and missed who was right over my head.

(Ya' know, we did find a real live bat sticking to the rocks at Global on Friday at the Katie and Lynn clinic.)

Center of the Red River Universe

No matter what organizers had planned, the real show central every day and night was at Miguels.  From the opening pizza banquet served to the Sunday morning climbers breakfast, there was always something going on.  Tents were popping up any hour of the day/night as climbers arrived from across the continent.  The constant slam of the door on a portaJohn, stoves fired up out back before dawn or just after midnight to make buckets of noodles or pints of coffee.  Headlamps winding their way through the maze of tents.  Crowds of visitors dropping in each night for a pizza as the line s

Sometimes you needed an address to find someone among the identically colored tents.

More sponsors than we could handle

Red Bull vehicle couldn't handle the hill to the 'Lode on Saturday. Soooo, guess that means no free beverages and cocktails until you come back from the Flash Rally event!
