The man behind the B.A.T.

The man behind the B.A.T.

Long before port-a'ledges, old folks slept hanging in their harness and maybe a sling behind the head. Then came Army surplus hammocks that left you hanging like a banana. But leave it to Warren Harding to develop what he called 'basically absurd technology' item, his 'Bat Tent for big wall comfort and protection, the precursor to the modern platforms used today. I'm sure it also had a wine bottle holder somewhere on it. Shirt memorializes his efforts; sorry I have no photo of him in the bat tent.

well it seems that Mr. Harding is a forgotten man as this post has been up a couple days and nobody asks or wonders about the bat tent? How sad.

Sorry WC, meant to comment on this a couple of days ago but all I could think to say is...God you gotta a lot of random climbing memorabilia! I've seen pictures of the bat tent. No wondering why that thing didn't become popular. haha. Harding isn't forgotten...I think of him every time I slam in a bolt! (Warren liked his bolts)

yeah he was the bolting king when the first issues came up between him and Robbins. Like how he called it basically absurd' since most of his ideas were sorta wierd. His 'tent was not much more than an a rigged army cot-turned-portaledge with a rainslicker over it as a fly. but he was innovative at least.

Warren Harding is on my favorites. There are great pictures of him on the net. Patagonia had a bunch in there history of El Cap section. Dont know if its stiil there but very cool if it is.

yeah, I have an old original copy of Downward Bound, one of the first confusing books I sought for 'instruction' when I started to climb. That probably explains alot about me. Yes, he is one of my idols of course.

This is the web address to a slide show called 'Yosemite In The Sixties' by Glen Denny. There are some great photos and imfo and a few really good pictures of Warren Harding.

I've seen that new book listed, like 60 bucks, so will wait until it's cheaper at Amazon or something before I add it to my Yosemite library. Can't enjoy all the good video stuff and downloads on my poor little dial up here, takes hours to just load a 4 minute news video clip, etc. I'll upgrade someday,,, if I ever stop buying climbing books, gear and wall holds.

It's not video, it's just a bunch of pictures with captions explaining.
