BOULDER, Colorado (AP) -- On the same day that Neal Young received his USA Climbing Regional Championships First Place plaque in the mail, the reigning CO/NM Region Adult Intermediate champion announced his retirement from professional climbing.
"I've talked it over with my family, co-workers and friends," said a teary-eyed Young from his office in Boulder, Colorado. "They all came to the same conclusion: that after the extraordinary circumstances that led me to winning my division at regionals, there is absolutely no chance in hell that I'll ever come close to winning anything ever again, and that I should do everything in my power to never embarrass them like that in the future. It is with great pride and sadness that I announce my retirement from competitive climbing."
The "extraordinary circumstances" Young referenced included the fact that he was the only person signed up in his division at the USA Climbing Regional Championships.
"I wanted to go out on top, on my terms," Young also added. "I look forward to a retirement of continued flailing on the rock, only hopefully with less people watching from now on."
