I went on an adventure to see what barefoot climbing was like. I love it --- It's so natural! Notice I didn't bring chalk either.... I am understanding what Crash always says about how we can drop EVERYTHING and we can still climb. It's so pure... so simple... I simply love it.

If the temps are down I can climb without chalk but my hands sweat too much to not use chalk in the summertime.
climbingbum says:
I tried climbing barefoot in hocking hills but the sandstone is still pretty rough it tore my feet up. It was fun though!
badash says:
For some reason I like it better on most things... I like being able to crimp my toes to edges and stuff, its reallllly fun to me!
Ben Strohmeier says:
i did a V3 highball slab in bishop bearfoot. it was intense but i climb barefoot alot if nobodys around but people seem to think thats nasty, like your feet are any less clean than your hands

this will never be me. I can't even walk barefoot over gravel. Need thin socks in my shoes even.
climbingbum says:
I have climbers feet so i cant climb barefoot. If i do barefoot climbing im campusing stuff. haha
badash says:
thats awesome, ben! And yeah i agree.... and climbing bum, have you tried to climb barefoot outside? My friend Josh has THE WORST climbing feet --- they look like troll feet... but he is REALLY good at climbing barefoot.
woodchuck07 says:
see, it didn't take long for Ash' to get a 'featured' photo back up again did it? Nice fall colors too, besides those big bare feet scrambling up the rock. What, like size 9 or so? Nyyaaaaah!
climbingwall says:
Glad to see I'm not the only redneck posting "barefoot" shots.:^) Everytime I see Vegas now when I'm climbing, he always asks if I'm barefootin' so he can take pics.
Cheers!
badash says:
uhhhhhh do my feet really look that big? I wear a size 5.5 i think... all i know is that i wear a size 35 and 1/2 climbing shoe........ big feet? ha.
woodchuck07 says:
must have been the camera angle! Hobbit feet! I like that one. I represent the Yeti size and shaped foot, so you can imagine what my climbing shoes must look like. My no-arch walks on the sidewalls of the shoes all the time. Hmmm, we had sort of a 'best male legs' semi-contest going on months ago, so why not a 'bigfoot' edition too? Ash', yer' just fine, cuz we're messin' with you. So many excellent shots of climbing perfection, well if we didn't hunt for some flaw what fun would it be?
gonzobeer says:
maybe we should start a hobbit feet category :)

I climbed most of summer with out shoes or chalk, but I climbed over water at a lake. And a word of warning you hands are cleaner than your feet. e.i. athletes foot, and climbers feet are disgusting.
badash says:
I might fall under that category soon...
woodchuck07 says:
I've been bare foot around my house alot the last year, and I swear my feet are expanding as they don't fit in climbing shoes easily since. Think they are getting bigger with no tight shoes on all day.
Universal Rhythm says:
I hate climbing barefoot. Not comfortable at all, and I do walk around barefoot outside often. On the rock just isn't for me.

I like shoes but I have never used chalk. I think if chalk were never used the climbing would be better. I hate chalk.
badash says:
eh, i guess climbing barefoot isnt for everybody. I'm sure i wouldnt like it on a lot of climbs but the ones i did try it on were amazing.
and you dont use chalk... at all!? I start slipping off holds if i dont use chalk.... but it does leave a trace which isnt so cool...
ff113 says:
No I never have used chalk. I get some weird looks sometimes when people ask me if I want to use theirs. I just always say no thanks!
woodchuck07 says:
Chalk has always been a 'purity' issue for some climbers. Depends where you climb I say. Granite and rough rock doesn't need much. But I grew up on slippery no-friction quartzite at Devils Lake in humid summer conditions where chalk was pretty much the only way to stay on the rock when it got vertical or beyond.
Universal Rhythm says:
just use the colored chalk to match the rock type you're using
