When dawn breaks in the Alps, a soft orange light rolls across Switzerland,
silhouetting peaks and splashing the snowfields pink. The Eiger is first to
concede to the sun, then the Matterhorn: the looming towers of the Grandes
Jorasses hold out for seconds before, in an instant, a vast triangular
shadow projects on to the lowlands of France. It will be hours before the
valleys are lit, but here on Mont Blanc morning has begun. Five hundred
metres below the summit two Italian climbers walk to the Vallot Hut -

Mount Nemo Threatened by Quarry

A new proposed quarry threatens Mount Nemo; one of
Southern Ontario’s oldest and most popular climbing areas. The massive
limestone cliff contains a broad range of traditional and sport routes
and is considered the best crag in the Milton region. Located
approximately 30 minutes from Toronto, Mount Nemo is used by climbers,
day hikers and families during the year. A citizen’s group called
Protecting Escarpment Rural Land (PERL) is hosting a benefit concert on
Saturday, September 20 featuring Bruce Cockburn, Sarah Harmer, and 2008

Team Highpoint's Fund Raising Project For: THE ROWELL FUND FOR TIBET

Team Highpoint is pleased to announce that they will be
attempting state highpoints #48 (Arkansas) and #49 (Wyoming) in the
next two months. The top of Arkansas is known as Magazine Mountain
(2,753 feet) and is located in the Ozark National Forest. The highest
point in Wyoming is Gannett Peak in the Wind River Range. At 13,804
feet, Gannett Peak is the 5th highest state highpoint and requires a longer approach hike than any of the other 49 states highpoints.

Climbers Say Bad Gear, Luck and Judgment Hurt on K2

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- An Italian who survived
an avalanche that killed fellow climbers, including an Alaskan, on the
world's second-highest peak said Wednesday poor equipment and a mistake
by a porter contributed to the tragedy.

Marco Confortola was among 30 mountaineers who began their ascent of K2
on Friday. He was stranded after an ice fall swept some climbers away
and left others stranded in frigid conditions just below the
28,250-foot summit.

Architect, Teacher To Climb Peaks In 50 States

Seattle architect Zach Price hopes
to reach the peak of Mount Rainier at sunset Monday, putting him only
one mountain away from scaling the highest peaks in each state in less
than 50 days.

Price, 30, teamed up with longtime friend and
fellow climber Mike Haugen, a 31-year-old middle-school teacher from
Denver, for the cross-country mountain-climbing blitz. Their adventure
is part of a program of outdoor-equipment maker Coleman to get kids
physically active and to fight childhood obesity.
