What was your first climb?

Posted by mikitta on 8/6/2007

The first time you roped up and got on the rock?

My first time was in 1985. I went out to Veedauwoo with my ex hubby (before we were married) and his best friend, Tracy. We did all three pitches of Walts Wall, both pitches of Ed's Crack and then we did Hastler's Hatbox (the rout). I can't recall if we hiked out to Hide Away Chimney though.

I remember doing this in tennis shoes and wearing a swiss seat. I rapped off 6 biners.

I was hooked for life :)

God Bless,
mik

I started climbing in a gym in '91...I know, I know. (didn't know anyone that could take me outside) My first route outside was on the Billboard wall in American fork canyon. The route was "Small Change"- 11a and it totally kicked my ass. (that's what you end up climbing when you volunteer to belay for a hard man just so you can get outside.) hahaha.

Hmmm... I think it was "moon rock" in Hawaii. We called it that because we bounced around like moonmen on the stretchy Army greenline. Moon rock is officially From Here to Eternity Cove. it where they shot the famous scene with the couple making out on the beach and the water washes up on them.

Leaning Tower, east face, 5.7 at Devils Lake. In big clunky mountaineering leather boots on that smooth quartzite. Just beat my feet against it, going nowhere for a looong time, and if not for the 'thank God' buckets in last 10 ft. I never would have made it up. Forearms blown out for next hour though.. Yup, I was hooked for sure.
Hey, Bum! 3 Pines is my favorite 'date' climb at the Gunks. ...

Second Coming (3P 5.7) at Looking Glass Rock, NC. With Mike McCormick in 1992. Hooked me big time.

The Spires, Butte Montana. With Borrowed everything. Just me and a group of guys, one of them my husband (Boyfriend at the time). He was bellaying me from the top. Couldn't see him, couldn't hear him (because of the wind). A bit of an adrenaline rush!!

March 2004-RR took me and some others out to The Garden of the Gods, and put us up on Silver Spoons (5.7 and all slab).

My first route was a 5.7 at Military Wall in the Red River Gorge. I can't remember what it's called...

My first route was The Magical Semi Automatic Chrome Plated Enima Syringe at Lumpy Ridge in RMNP.

So, J72, did you come off that route needing an Enima or feeling like you just had one? (or is the name code for the gear you need on the route?)

woodchuck07 says:

<em>woodchuck07</em>'s picture

you just made that name up, did'nt you?

Feeling like I just had one. My first climb, 5 pitches, and I thought I was not going to make the last pitch. Scared the shit out of me. Went back and did it two years later and basically free soloed it (2 peices of pro per pitch). It was cool to see my progress and I remember that.

My first climb was some unnamed route that a buddy of mine and I top roped, but the funny part of the story was how we did it. I was probably 12, we used a rope we stole from his grandpa's boat and each of us had 3 leather belts (you know the kind you where around your pants). I had one belt on each leg, one on my waste, all tied together with a piece of rope. We used a tree at the top as an anchor (only the tree, and the rope was simply wrapped around the tree, not webbing, biners, nothing!!) My buddy wrapped the rope around a pelican hook biner as a belay device. I should be dead right now.

But technically my first climb was Gossamer (5.7) in rushmore, my profile picture is me on Gossamer. Great climb, huge flake in the black hills 4 bolts to the anchor and then a rap into the window to finish it off!!

As much as I hate to admit it, first time outdoors was at Great Falls, VA. Yes, I had just started climbing, and didn't know any better! I didn't know that there was hundreds of other places to climb where the rock quality is much better than Great Falls.

But I know that a lot of DC climbers learned how to climb at Great Falls, despite the rock quality......

My first outdoor climb was at Red Canyon Open Space and I led it. My wife belays for me, and I do the climbing. I hadn't had any luck meeting someone who could climb when I was able to go so I learned some things the hard way--I have met some other climbers now who have taught me a lot, but I still have led almost every climb I have done. My first indoor climb was at Peterson AFB in Colorado Springs.

Katie, if your first climb at Military was a 5.7 it would have to have been either Blade Runner, G.I., or Decay's Way?

For me, my first climbing was bouldering. There was this boulder back in the woods where we used to play Army. We would do bouldering problems as part of our "military training". We had no idea what rock climbing was :)

My first outdoor climbing was at Carlton Peak on the shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota. This was part of an Outward Bound course that I took when I was 16 years old.

My first real climb was at enchanted rock in 89 or 90 i believe. Cant remember the route. I went there as a young kid and pretended i was a climber. A real climber saw me scrambling and offered to put me on Top Rope. Thats probably why i do the same now.

woodchuck07 - Just so you don't think I'm making it up I got a couple pictures of the route. 1st - the 5th pitch. 2nd - the rap off.

My first climb was Mr. Bungle, 5.8 at the Red. Went with some friends on a whim. I was completely enchanted by everything that is climbing. Everything that is but the crowds you encounter at Left Flank on memorial day weekend. We had to wait in line to get on that climb. I wondered why I didn't see any Ky. plates in the parking lot that day. I found out later that locals stay clear of the gorge on holiday weekends, for good reason.

My first was Face Up To That Crack.... right next to Mr. Bungles in RRG... I was sooo weak with laughter after i rolled up on the ledge and my partner told me to stand up cause i wasn't done yet.. I looked up and realized the anchors were about another 20 ft above me.... i just shook my head and wondered what in the world makes people feel compelled to do this... then we went to Miquel's ... and I started to realize what it's all about... and yeah... we try to stay away on Holiday weekends... wednesday mornings are where it's at...

My first time was earlier this year maybe about February, my brother and his friend kept going rock climbing at this local climbing gym, and I went with my dad when he went to pick him up. I thought bouldering was COMPLETELY different than what it was when indoor climbing. Heheh, I thought they had a giant boulder in the middle of the gym. :) it was so weird when I first walked in there. I was forever hooked :)  I was on an auto belay for my first finished roped path though.

Indoor was at Vertical adventures with my church group.

Outdoor was at RRG at the Bruise Brothers wall in Muir Valley.

BigFatRock says:

My first time climbing was with a church group too, back in Jr. High. Since then I only got to go every now and then. My first outdoor climb was something at Minral Wells in Texas. My first lead climb was in the gym at the University of North Texas just over a year ago, first outdoor lead was Corins Corner (5.6, dihedral crack climb) at Paradise on the Brazos in Texas.
