I have recently arrived in New York from UK. On a recent trip up the Hudson River I saw what looks like amazing climbing on the western side of the river. However, there were no parties climbing and I can find no information about any areas/routes. Do I conclde this is off-limits and, if so, why?

I'm originally from New York. I'm trying to think of the area you are talking about. I'm not sure specifically. There is some good climbing in New York. Great bouldering at the Glenn by Niagara Falls (towards Buffalo at the east end of Lake Ontario). There is some good trad, sport and bouldering at Little Falls New York (Just west of Syracuse). There is the well known Gunks (South of Albany) that has a ton of great trad climbing, although it can be quite crowded. If you wanna beat the crowds and climb in some beautiful areas I suggest Keene Valley (a place close to my heart). Stop into "The Mountaineer" gear shop (great staff) in Keene and they will give you any beta you want. Let me know if you need anymore specific information on those areas.

Nathan.
