I predict a strong early season here in Colorado, heavy late-summer rain and cool temperatures should mean climbable ice in Rocky Muntain National Park by mid-October. Lokk for routes on Long's Peak and Notchtop to come in first, Loch Vale and Thatchtop will take a little longer. Sadly, the rest of the west looks quite dry.

I am out running on a county road yesterday churning up a hill right on the verge between asphalt and the sand and gravel when under my feet I hear a strange sound so I do Fred Flinstone straight up into the air with a touch of John Cleese silly walk. YAAAHHHH! Sure enough there is this little f*cker of a rattlesnake right there that I nearly trod right on fixin'to nail me.
So, winter can't get hear soon enough. I saw Silverton got 3 feet of snow! It is mild this week so whatever snow that fell should melt nicely and get the drip ready for the next big cold snap.
Mid-October for sure...

Snow at my house today, to think four days ago I was out bouldering on an 80 degree day in shorts, one must love Colorado for this reason. With the drip already in place this blast of cold air, followed by another Canadian front tomorrow, should set things up beautifully in Rocky Mountain NP, plus areas like Lake City and the greater San Juans should be in good nick.
Another month for Vail I would say depending on how brutal it gets, I hope it gets really brutal.

Bastards! I hate all of you lucky ice climbers in Colorado as I sit here in Illinois watching it rain week after week. Ooooohhh! Snow tonight@! maybe I'll have an icy treat to scamper up by the new year!
