hi guys,

Me and my climbing group of friends are in a bit of a fix! We've all climbed a bit but are dying for more. Since here we don't have any indoor gyms and buying a rope is a bit expensive, we decided taht the next best thing to get pumped without relying on someone else was to go bouldering. Then again bouldering without a pad is quite stupid and leathal but guess what? NOBODY sells pads here so we talked to a few veterans and they told us they have been using DIY ones for years. It makes sens considering it would cost to much to have one shipped over.

Its construction is simple: 2" of Hi-density foam, a layer of corrugated plastic and another 3" of foam. Everything is kept together with duct tape and then covered in a strong material.

What do you think? Any suggestions?

cheers

I've used old couch cushions in a really tough garbage bag. A piece of old dense foam/ ensolite pad should help firm up the landing side. Any old foam bedding or thick outdoor chair cushions works well for a starter too. Wonder how bubble wrap would do for a filler layer?

Great! even cheaper! Bubble wrap sounds nice though it would have to be changed eventually quite often I guess.

To tell you the truth I just go to know of a pad for sale here but at $180 it's way off my charts.

Where do you live that there are boulders and no climbing shops? Look on websites for the older "Metolious Cheap Bastard" Its the cheapest decent crash pad. I got one at REI last year for $100. Id imagine you could find one online and get it shipped to you. A lot of people just use good spotters and no pads if the landing is decent.

Last year I bought a used (only 3 times) Fat Bastard for 50 bucks as a birthday gift for my sweetie. (she uses it as a gymnastics mat). So they're out there somewhere, just check around.

Many companies will sell just the cover, that way you can get a well made cover with straps and save money on the foam and shipping costs also.

cheers guys it just keeps getting better! Know any sites in particular who would send the cover?

Here in Malta, anyone who needs something related to climbing phones good old Charlie who sells stuff from his home. There are no dedicated shops and the only ones that come anywhere near are outdoor ones who have some basic rappelling stuff or will get you mail order rock shoes at your own risk :\ sucks really considering all the rock we have
