My neighbor Tony bought these climbing shoes at a thrift store. I was a little surprised to see old EB climbing shoes in such great shape (looks like they've hardly been used). I mean, vintage EBs might be considered sub par climbing shoes now, but they were an important development in climbing history. I don't know when these "Maestrias" were made, though they do look like the originals seen in all the classic climbing photos.
It would be nice to read/view some history of climbing shoes. Does anyone know of a website or book with such information?
Sorry the photo isn't well focused -- my camera is on the fritz. I can post clearer photos if necessary.
Does anyone want to buy them? Tony is only eleven years old and would like to make some cash...

I've seriously always wanted to climb in EB's to see what they're like. What size are they?
Universal Rhythm says:
haha my dad has some of those and well although they aren't as great as our newer shoes, they sure do beat tennis shoes by a long shot.

I think those are awesome. If Ray Jardine could climb The Phoenix in those, they can't be that bad. HAHA. But then again, he was the man.

I say Steve Komito in Estes Park would be the expert. ShoeMaster of the 70's/80's climbing world. I had a pair once. They were the first step up from the old RR's, PA's and klettershoe. Vasque 'Ascenders were tough stiff leather shoes, with the shape of a climbing shoe but the ruggedness of a double boot. EB's were the first (and only) shoe to advance climbing until the 'Spanish rubber' of Firey's came about. I've saved every shoe I had, 'cept for my old EB's I sold for 35 bucks used waaay long time ago. There were a couple 'shoe history' posts done very early this year. I think that was how we got the 'climbing history' thread going. Go check out oldest photos under that site thread.

speaking of Komito's, I sent my EB's to him back around 78 or so to have the uppers covered with a wrap of thin leather, (common addition to protect the canvas uppers from being trashed in cracks) anyhoo I got them back and it being the Christmas season his little helpers saw fit to stitch in a Christmas tree, a design like holly complete with green vine and red berries, and my name... I had to call and thank them it was such a nice gesture... I hope those crazy hippie chicks are all doing okay!
woodchuck07 says:
Yes, that sounds like what his elfs would be up to. Oh you gotta love the hippie chicks, that's for sure. Years later, I found the first 'Women of Climbing' calendar for sale in his shop..before internet sales had taken off for such specialty items. Remember when he was at the top of the hill and visiting climbers could sack out in the parking lot each night? 2 block walk down the hill to the bus station washrooms. Those were the good old days.
