My adventures with the kids

Posted by Hokker on 3/23/2007 on Hokker's blog

I am writing about some of our ongoing (mis)adventures climbing here in beautiful Colorado. We got a compass and rudimentary knowledge on how to use it, a guidebook or two, and the desire to find some cool spots. My 2 children are the climbers I am the official spotter and gear hauler. I am going to try to have fun if possible with two bickering children and I may have to camp at some point. I am not a happy camper! My 9YO son can climb 5.10 in the gym and has climbed the occasional (non reachy) v3 in the gym. My 12yo daughter can climb 5.9 and sometimes 5.10 in the gym and has a hard time keeping up with her little brother. She does have determination and a willingness to try different ways to attempt a problem. I hope you all enjoy our adventures

Two weeks ago Ben (my 9 yo) did brashear's crack at the cave in Morrison and Kayleigh (my 12 yo) Started working on wisdom traverse. I will post when she gets it. There are some hard hard parts to it but we saw a young lady do it fairly easily. She was a great climber and had the route wired but it showed it could be done. That is some of the best beta you can get. Especially when we watched a dude try it a few times and lose it on the last few moves. Very challenging and it may take a few years but she will get it eventually. Now we have to find a new problem for Ben...
Next time I will bring the camera.
Thank you to the folks that helped them out with encouragement and beta for the routes!

Well our spring climbing has come to a halt as my son broke his collarbone and will be out for the next 4 to 6 weeks. My daughters first question was that make it so she had to miss climbing. Heck of a sis huh?

Sorry to hear that! I broke my collarbone 3 yrs ago on a mt.bike, and I'm in my thirties. He's still a rubber person and should heal up pretty quickly. I was out for 3 months! Happy healing!

We are taking him to an orthopedic sports doctor on Friday the 18th. Hopefully we get good news.

He comes with me to accupuncture and gets some needles to help the healing. Every little bit helps!
